As the COVID-19 pandemic spreads across the world, Chinese technology companies are leveraging their prowess and coming up with novel new methods and technologies to detect and prevent against the deadly virus. Having proved themselves on home grounds, these companies are now extending help to other countries where the pandemic has caused havoc.

Huawei Cloud, the cloud computing unit of the Chinese tech major, has partnered with Huiying Medical Technology, an artificial intelligence (AI) company to offer AI-enabled auxiliary diagnostic systems to two hospitals in Ecuador. With the systems successfully in place, Ecuador became the only country in Latin America with an AI-enabled auxiliary system in place.

Zheng Yelai, president of Huawei Cloud, said: “The AI-enabled system can help doctors make faster, more accurate decisions on whether patients are infected with the virus.” The AI-enabled system took only 14 hours to connect with the existing hospital systems. After the success of the system in Ecuador, several other countries are contacting Huawei Cloud to seek cooperation to integrate the system into their medical facilities to combat COVID-19.

The AI-medical imaging evaluation system has proven to be helpful in China’s efforts to flatten the COVID-19 curve since CT imaging is an important reference point for the diagnosis and treatment of novel coronavirus pneumonia. While traditional quantitative analysis takes up to six hours, an AI-enabled system such as Huawei’s does the same task within a minute. This saves crucial time to quarantine the patients and start an effective treatment.
